The second step in the model is creating a workplace that is compelling, which in turn creates energy, excitement and thankfully profits. The following elements are vital to creating a compelling workplace:

[space] Retention of Key Staff

Most people look to improve their business either because there is a problem that needs fixing, or they want to grow their profit. The link between profit, customer satisfaction and employee satisfaction is well documented in business literature. The profit chain begins with the employee: by building employee satisfaction a company can increase employee loyalty and productivity; employees with high levels of satisfaction are known to produce more work, and better work. This means more satisfied customers who return more often, and bring others with them.

The style and culture of the organisation and fulfilling the company values in a courageous way leads to creating a compelling place to work. By defining behaviour standards, each employee can understand the values of the company and is empowered to express those values in his or her personal way.

Our research has uncovered three factors that contribute to employee satisfaction, as shown in the diagram below. Each factor interacts with the others, and are critical to creating a compelling workplace.

Positive Attitude towards the Client

Positive Attitude towards the Client

The employee needs to have a positive attitude towards the client; as it is the client who is generating profits.

An employee needs to believe in the services or products the company creates, with leaders demonstrating the importance of the customer to the employee.

Positive Attitude towards the Company

Positive Attitude towards the Company

The company itself has a large impact on an employee's satisfaction. For an employee to give their best effort they need to respect the company's objectives and ethics, the team and their manager. The company needs a good communication system. There should be a high level of job security and tolerance of the employee's life outside work.

Positive Attitude towards their Role

Positive Attitude towards the Job

An employee's attitude towards the job affects their satisfaction. An employee needs to be clear about their responsibilities; to feel empowered and valued; and to remain stimulated and interested in the work.

The employee needs the right tools, resources and training to do the job.
